A Wesleyan Student Hero

On July 29th 1945 the USS Indianapolis is sunk after delivering the nuclear bomb.

Bob Keeney, a sophomore at Wesleyan University who was born in Wethersfield, died at see.

Keeney, born in 1923 enlisted in the navy during WWII in 1943. In July of 1945 he left for the Pacific Islands of Tinian and Guam aboard the USS Indianapolis. On July 29th, less then two weeks before the Pacific War ended, the ship was hit by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. With 1,512 men aboard, the ship went down in 15 minutes into shark infested waters. The ship had just dropped one of the nuclear weapons that ended the war.

Do you remember the movie Jaws? On of the men in the movie was a survivor of the USS Indianapolis, and joined the team to find the sharks because of what happened to all his naval team members who did not survive.
