MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Westfield Fire Department Tuesday evening used a soon-to-be demolished building as a training ground.

A training exercise commenced at about 6:30 p.m. in the area of 344 Ballfall Road and Olympus Parkway.

Residents in the vicinity noticed "a significant fire department presence" as part of the exercise. The training involved an acquired structure that is slated for demolition.

During the training, smoke produced from smudge pots was deployed. Various noises associated with fire department operations were loud and clear.

The department invited community members to observe the training.

"This provides an opportunity for the public to see firefighters in action and understand their preparedness efforts," fire officials said.
