Consider purchasing a personalized, engraved brick to be placed at the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial. These bricks can be engraved with words to remember and honor a fallen hero, a loved one who served in the military, or simply be your way to show your support for this project. What better time than in this month of May when we all stop to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May and falls on May 25th this year. Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action while in service to the United States.

How will you observe Memorial Day this year?On Memorial Day, it is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave. In your own community, you might be hosting a parade and other ceremonies that honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedom.

In Connecticut, the military death toll in the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is 65. These 65 men and women had families in Connecticut who mourn their loss every day. The loss of these heroes created a void for the loved ones left behind.

Each of us in this country must never forget their sacrifice. In an effort to give something back to the families who have given so much to America and to honor and remember the 65 men and women who died in service to our country in Iraq and Afghanistan, a dedicated group of people have been working on our State’s newest memorial (Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial) in Middletown, CT. You can read more about your own hometown heroes and ways that you can honor them and support this memorial project at www.cttreesofhonor.com.
