Xavier Runners Capture Cross Country Team Title

The Falcons placed five runners in the top 12 to win the Class L boys championship at Wickham Park; Mercy, Middletown runners also succeed.

MANCHESTER, CT — A four-runner pack just behind the overall leader enabled Xavier High School, last year's State Open champions, to breeze to victory in the Class L boys cross country championships Friday at Wickham Park.

The Falcons compiled 26 points to easily outdistance runner-up Bristol Central, which had 80.

Robbie Cozean, Peter Schulten, Wiliam Curran and Dillon Selfors placed second through fifth, with Eamon Burke finishing 12th to secure Xavier's 31 state title overall.

The Falcons advance as a team to the State Open on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., also at Wickham Park.

Middletown High School also ran in the boys Class L race, placing sixth behind the efforts of Matthew Lecky (9) and Sean Ahern (22).

On the girls' side, Mercy was 10th in Class MM, with Rachael Cipolla taking 20th place, while Middletown finished 11th in Class L, behind Ariana Monarca's 10th-place effort.
