MILFORD, CT — Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire on Crowley Avenue Saturday morning, according to fire officials.

Crews responded to the fire around 9 a.m. Firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions on the second floor of 28 1/2 Crowley Ave. Seven people managed to escape on their own, but two were sent to the hospital. One person sustained burn wounds to their hands and another was being treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters rescued a cat from the building.

The Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause of the fire. Smoke detectors in the building were new and alerted occupants when the fire broke out.

" Another major factor that kept the bulk of the fire in place was due to a closed door to the fire apartment. Although the top of the door was burned away when crews got to the second floor, it gave the occupants enough time to exit the building," said Battalion Chief Thomas Thornberg. "So remember to close the doors in a fire to prevent the fire from growing by introducing fresh air and oxygen to the fire which intern accelerates the growth of the fire."
