DOT Taking Steps to Make Bridgeport Avenue More Pedestrian Friendly

There have been four fatal accidents in the area over the past decade.

MILFORD, CT — State Representative Kim Rose (D-Milford) announced today the State Department of Transportation (DOT) has accepted her calls for pedestrian safety improvements on Bridgeport Avenue and has prioritized a request for work to be performed that will address some of the main concerns brought to them by her, according to a news release from her office.

The concerns followed a series of accidents along Bridgeport and Woodland Avenues where more than 17 pedestrian accidents have occurred between 2006 and 2016, including 4 fatalities.

Rose reached out to the DOT asking to make crosswalks more visible, re-painting the crosswalks, determining if adjusting the timing of traffic/crossing lights will make a difference and possibly making the lighting brighter along Bridgeport Avenue.

“I am pleased to report that our voices have been heard and the DOT has agreed to make Bridgeport Avenue more pedestrian friendly,” Rose said in a statement. “Their decision to prioritize our request is evidence of how necessary these critical improvements are. I would like to thank the DOT and our local authorities for expediting this request and working with us to make this happen.”

DOT Traffic Engineering issued the Service Memo and Plans for the lane reconfiguration/pavement markings, signs and crosswalk painting on Route 1 (Bridgeport Ave.) at Rivercliff Drive today, October 18, and tomorrow, Tuesday the 19 on Route 1.
