Hickey’s route to Milford is an interesting one. She grew up in Pleasantville, NY, went to college for fine arts in graphic design and worked in a medical office in a clerical position before her life forever changed when her mother saw an ad for the firefighter test.

She worked as a volunteer firefighter for awhile to ensure she liked it and the rest is history. She said she likes that Milford’s test is the same for men and women and training for it was challenging.

The physical test included wearing a 75-pound weighted vest. Hickey stresses that she doesn’t deserve any more attention than anyone else at the Fire Department.

Milford Fire Capt. Gregory Carman told Milford Patch that “Firefighter Hickey has brought to our Department experience from being a volunteer in her hometown, determination by completing the arduous testing process, and professionalism shown by her conduct during her training. This firefighter’s addition to our ranks is a credit to her hard work and perseverance.”
