MILFORD, CT — A local clamming vessel crew rescued a man after his boat capsized in Milford on Wednesday, according to fire officials.

The Milford Emergency Center received a report of a fisherman in the water south of Charles Island clinging to a capsized boat.

Captain Mark Peckman and his crew of the clamming vessel Joseph Julius were making their way out for the day when they came across the man who had been in the water since 3 a.m. They were able to assist the man safely onto their boat.

The Milford Fire Marine Division met up with them on their way back into port. The man was showing signs of mild hypothermia and was taken by an awaiting ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation.

"This individual lost his phone and all ways to communicate when his boat overturned which could have resulted in a much more serious situation and it shows how quickly things can happen while you are out on the water," according to fire officials. "With the change of seasons brings decreasing water temperatures and the increase chances of severe water conditions, The Milford Fire Department reminds all boaters to use caution and to always be safe."
