Garden Dedicated in Memory of Maren Sanchez at Jonathan Law High School

The garden was dedicated in memory of the student who was killed last Spring.

A garden filled with purple flowers, two benches on top of stone covered ground and stained glass artwork make up Maren’s Memory Garden at Jonathan Law High School.

The garden was dedicated in memory of Maren Sanchez on Wednesday, the Jonathan Law junior who was fatally stabbed in April by fellow classmate Christopher Plakson, various media outlets report.

School officials said roughly 100 people attended the event and a small reception was held immediately following the ceremony.

According to WTNH News 8, the ceremony began with Sanchez’s friend, Rachel Escobar who sang a song in the late teenager’s memory. Those attending the event wore purple, Sanchez’s favorite color.

Jonathan Law Principal Fran Thompson gave a speech at the ceremony, the Milford Mirror reports. Thompson told the students who gathered at the ceremony that he could not explain why Sanchez’s life had ended at such an early age but that out of this tragedy grew true compassion.

The garden is located behind the school, the New Haven Register reports. It is fittingly placed on a hill that overlooks the softball field as Sanchez was manager of the girl’s softball and swim teams.

According to the paper, the garden was created through donations from people in the community and members of local businesses.
