GoFundMe Campaign Started for Milford Murder Victim

A fundraising goal has been set of $5,000 to assist Jose Araujo's family. He was killed while on the job Thursday in Bridgeport.

On Thursday morning, Jose Araujo 30, of Milford, who was working construction in Bridgeport was murdered, and family and friends have created a GoFundMe campaign.

“This is a fund set up for the family of Jose Araujo who was taken from us too early. If everyone out there could imagine being in Jose’s families shoes at this very difficult time, let’s all please come together to give his family a gift to relieve as much stress as we possibly can,” the GoFundMe campaign states.

“He was an admirable family man and a dedicated Burns Construction employee for years. He was caring, always smiling, and his generosity touched many of our lives. Any donation big or small will be greatly appreciated.

The shooting happened at Chopsey Hill Road and Pond Street just after 9 a.m. Thursday. Araujo worked for Burns Construction company that was performing road work on Pond Street.

Witnesses stated that the suspect later identified as Gregory Weathers Jr., 33, of 449 Saunders Ave., approached a company foreman and inquired about a potential job, Bridgeport police said.

The foreman referred the individual to the company office to fill out an application. The suspect walked away but returned moments later and fired several shots without provocation, striking a different employee who was working in a trench along the side of the road, police said.

Araujo was pronounced dead Saint Vincent’s Medical Center.

Two Bridgeport police officers were working at the location directing traffic and immediately chased the suspect on foot, calling in their locations to 911 operators.

Other patrol officers converged on the area and located the suspect hiding behind a house on Saunders Avenue, across the street from where he lives. Police recovered a handgun.

Weathers was charged with murder and gun charges.

At this time, no motive had been established. The suspect and victim did not appear to know each other, police have said.
