High Temps, Walking Distances Discussed at Milford Schools Meeting

Recent warm weather made one board member wonder if fans should be placed in some school locations.

The maximum walking distance and lack of air conditioning were two of the concerns brought up at Tuesday’s Milford Public Schools Board of Education meeting.

An article in the New Haven Register said that several parents during public comment asked the board to rethink the distances for students who walk to school versus those who ride the bus.

The concern over distances included a couple of suspicious men in cars recently, students having to carry heavy backpacks and sports equipment and increased traffic since the distance rules were implemented, the article said.

Board member John DeRosa voiced his concern over the lack of air conditioning due to the higher than normal recent temperatures.

DeRosa, according to the Register, suggested looking into placing fans in cafeterias and multi-purpose rooms, though school officials said outfitting all classrooms with fans would be too costly.
