The General Court adopted "Milford" as the name of its community on Nov. 24, 1640.

IT HAPPENED IN MILFORD WEEK 15

On November 24, 1640 the General Court adopted “Milford” as the name of its community. It was named in commemoration of an English town and also referenced the fact that Milford constructed the first mill in New Haven Colony.

According to History of Milford Connecticut 1639-1939, in 1839 Milford was the fourth largest shoe producer in Connecticut. Production figures included: 700 pairs of shoes valued at $3,500 and 50,000 pairs of shoes valued at $45,900. Employees numbered sixty males and thirty females.

The Borough of Woodmont was incorporated by state charter on June 18, 1903. For more than fifty years the borough celebrates with an Annual Woodmont Day highlighted by neighborhood activities and a parade.
