Man Charged With Murder After Milford Shooting: PD

A man was charged with murder and several gun offenses after killing another man, according to police.

MILFORD, CT — A man was charged with murder after shooting another man on Edgefield Avenue Wednesday, according to police.

Police got several calls shortly before 1 p.m. about a fight between two people and possible gunfire. Officers arrived at 83 Edgefield Avenue and found Justin Spray, 35, in the side yard of the residence with an upper body gunshot wound. Spray was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Matthew Miner, 29, was detained by witnesses at the scene, and officers him into custody. Officers located a handgun at the scene, which witnesses said Miner used to shoot Spray, according to police.

Judge Maureen Dennis kept Miner's bond amount at $1 million during his arraignment and scheduled the next coutt date for June 7.

The state has a strong case, including witnesses and surveillance video of the incident, Assistant State's Attorney Matt Kalthoff said during the arraignment hearing.

Deputy Assistant Public Defender Kevin Semataska asked Dennis to reduce the bond to $750,000, but the request was denied. He said Miner had limited means of support, with income coming from small side jobs.

Miner has several pending cases, including multiple charges of violation of probation, according to court records.

Miner was charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and altering/removing identification marks on a firearm.

The shooting was the second of the year in the city. A Milford man was charged with attempting to murder his stepson in March after shooting him, according to police.
