Milford Asks Judge To End Maren Sanchez Lawsuit

Lawyers for the city are asking a judge to end a lawsuit filed by the family of Maren Sanchez, who was stabbed to death by a fellow student.

MILFORD, CT — The City of Milford has asked a Superior Court judge to end the case filed by the family of Jonathan Law High School stabbing victim Maren Sanchez.

The lawsuit filed by Sanchez’s mother Donna Sanchez alleges that guidance counselors and others were negligent and didn't follow proper procedure when they were told stabber Christopher Plaskon may be suicidal six months before the incident. She offered to settle the case for $23 million.

Sanchez was fatally stabbed in April 2014 after she turned down Plaskon's prom invitation. Plaskon, who was 16 at the time, pleaded no contest to murder. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison but could be out of jail after 13 years.

A civil lawsuit against Plaskon was settled last year for $1.6 million.

Lawyers for the City of Milford contend that no one could have foreseen the murder. Attorney James Tallberg wrote the following in a legal filing for the city.

“The Law personnel involved in this case were as devastated as the entire Milford community about what happened, and no doubt all of them would have acted to their own risk and harm to prevent it if they had seen any signs of what was coming. But there were no signs. Governing law and the facts of this tragic case establish that legal responsibility for the injuries and death of Maren Sanchez must not reach beyond Chris Plaskon himself. No other individual in her life or his life could have seen this coming which is why nobody did."
