Police said the mall was briefly evacuated Monday but has fully reopened for customers Monday afternoon.

MILFORD, CT — Milford police say the Connecticut Post Mall, 1201 Boston Post Road was briefly evacuated Monday afternoon but has since reopened. "The mall was evacuated earlier due to a dumpster fire. The fire has been extinguished. The mall has reopened," Milford police said.

A mall official said the mall and Sears are back open and its safe for patrons to resume shopping. Fire Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi said fire broke out in a large trash compactor at the Sears Department store around 1:30 p.m.

Milford firefighters arrived quickly and began to work on the "stubborn blaze," Fabrizi said.

"The unit was up against the building and filled with burning compacted trash. The mall was evacuated as a precaution due to smoke backing up into the interior of the building. A minor smoke condition was cleared from the structure, and the fire was contained to the compaction container," Fabrizi added.

The Milford Fire Marshal's Division was on scene to investigate. A cause has not been released. No injuries were reported.
