Milford Mayor Implements Spending Freeze: Report

Some department heads including the Police Chief have raised concerns about the spending freeze.

MILFORD, CT — Mayor Ben Blake's budget proposal calls for a slight tax decrease for the fourth year in a row and he instituted a spending freeze on March 14 to help create a sizable surplus in an effort to continue to keep taxes down, the Milford Mirror reports.

But some town department heads have raised concerns about the freeze on hiring or filling vacancies including temporary and seasonal employees. Milford Police Chief Keith Mello said the freeze means a lack of funds necessary to pay overtime costs and the popular bike patrols downtown had to be shelved, the Mirror reports.

No new police cars can be purchased the rest of this year, the chief said. Blake said the city is facing some tough decisions including the chance of reduced state aid and some costs have increased including workers' compensation costs.
