Milford Resident Named Barnard Scholar At Southern CT State University
Milford resident Sydney King was named a Barnard scholar at the school for her academic excellence and community service.

MILFORD, CT — Milford resident Sydney King received the Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award at Southern Connecticut State University for her academic excellence and commitment to community service. The award is one of the most prestigious at the school.
King is majoring in cultural anthropology and minoring in Spanish. Her academic adviser Kathleen Kozen highlighted her focus on social justice.
“Over the last three and a half years, Sydney has become a role model and leader in qualities that define public service at SCSU,” Skoczen said in a news release. “[Sydney] is an enthusiastic, energetic, thoughtful activist who will certainly bring forth a more just world.”

King joined AmeriCorps NCCC program between high school and college. She helped to teach students in California and rebuild homes that were destroyed during the North Carolina wildfires. Her passion for community service started when she was 14-years-old and participated in faith-led mission trips through her church.
She is studying abroad in Chile and plans to pursue a master's degree following graduation.

“My time at Southern Connecticut State University provided me with an innovative and diverse environment to learn from people’s real lives,” King said. “As I move forward in applying for fellowship and graduate school, I am looking to experience the inner workings of political and social change.”
