Thursday’s meeting is just a discussion and is open to the public. No final decisions will be made at the meeting.

The school board is in the midst of studying potential short and long-term changes to the school system because enrollment continues to decline.

Short-term the district is considering changing back to a K-5 elementary school configuration, which could lead to one elementary school closing. Three existing middle and two high schools would remain.

Potential long term options includes having six K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools, one K-8 school, likely Harborside, and two high schools with speciality offerings for students.

Another long-term option being considered is having seven K-5 elementary schools, three middle school, and two high schools with speciality offerings. The school board is also considering other options as well.

At a meeting held earlier this month, School Board Chairwoman Susan Glennon said no one wants to close an elementary school.

“The reality is we can consolidate our elementary schools,” Glennon said.

But she added savings realized from consolidation could partially be used to augment current academic offerings for students.

“We do want to provide program enhancements,” Glennon said.
