Milford School Board Reviews Changes To Student Meal Policy

Proposed revisions address unpaid meal balances, student protections and communication with families.

MILFORD, CT — Milford students would continue to have access to school meals regardless of unpaid account balances under a revised policy being considered by the Board of Education.

The board reviewed proposed changes to its school meal charging policy during its Oct. 26 meeting. The revisions are intended to clarify existing requirements and how the district handles unpaid balances.

Under Connecticut law, students are entitled to charge one standard breakfast or lunch each school day.

The policy also prohibits school employees from publicly identifying or embarrassing students because of unpaid meal charges.

District staff discussed how families are notified when meal accounts have negative balances. The board considered wording that would allow notifications to be sent regularly rather than requiring them every school day.

The discussion also addressed the distinction between standard school meals and optional purchases, such as ice cream or chips. Students may be unable to charge those additional items even when they remain entitled to a standard meal.

The proposed revisions also address helping eligible families apply for free or reduced-price meals.

The board did not adopt the revised policy Monday. It is expected to return for a second reading and possible approval.
