New Ideas Pitched To Keep People From Accessing Sandbar To Charles Island

A meeting between state and local officials was held this week.

MILFORD, CT — Local and state officials met Tuesday night regarding what steps can be done to make the sandbar leading from Silver Sands State Park to Charles Island safer by encouraging people to stay off of it.

Since June there have been seven water rescues in Milford and tragically George Swaby, 28, of Bridgeport drowned last month. Signs already caution people about the dangers of trying to navigate the sandbar to Charles Island because of the strong currents.

WFSB 3 TV reports that during Tuesday's meeting officials discussed adding more signs and possibly lifeguards. Kim Rose, a state representative, is seeking to have the language on signs be stronger regarding the potential dangers and possibly adding a kiosk, which could show graphics of the danger when the tide is coming back.
