Partial Building Collapse Reported In Milford Following Storm

MILFORD, CT — A partial building collapse occurred in Milford as storms knocked down trees and power lines overnight.

The collapse happened at a building at 11 Cascade Boulevard on the town line with Orange, WFSB 3-TV reported.

Crews reported significant damage at the site, including water and gas leaks. The sprinkler system had also been activated.

The roof came off the building and onto power lines on Metro-North railroad, affecting the trains. The building houses an electronics company.

The City of Milford said in a Facebook post that the storm has led to numerous downed trees and power lines.

As of Thursday morning, United Illuminating maps showed more than 2,200 Milford customers and 1,200 Orange customers were without power.

WFSB 3-TV reported that Milford was particularly hard hit by the storm due to a microburst between 1 and 1:15 a.m. leading to heavy wind and rain.

That resulted in trees falling and damaging 11 homes in the city. One homeowner told WFSB 3-TV that a tree landed on their daughter's bedroom while everyone in the home was asleep.

Orange police also said that "multiple utility poles snapped in half on Marsh Hill Road and dozens of trees damaged on Marsh Hill Road, Executive Lane, and Cascade Boulevard in Orange and in Milford."

Those roads will be closed for most of the day as public works crews conduct cleanup.

"Cleanup from this early morning's weather event is well underway but it will take some time to get everything back to normal," police said.

In other storm aftermath, New Haven's Lighthouse Point Park sustained heavy damage. Sections of the building's walls appeared to be missing as limbs and branches were strewn across the park. View photos of the damage at WFSB 3-TV.
