Sandbar Leading To Charles Island Under Scrutiny After Recent Drowning Death
A 28-year-old man drowned last month and attention has returned as to what to do with the sandbar.

MILFORD, CT — Tragically, a 28-year-old man, George Swaby, of Bridgeport died when a wave knocked him off of the sandbar leading to Charles Island last month. And over the years there have been other drowning incidents there.
State Rep. Kim Rose, D-Milford, has set up a meeting with state and local officials next week to see if something can be done to make the sandbar safer, WFSB 3 TV reports. Signs are placed stating that the sandbar can be dangerous.
There has been discussion about closing the sandbar or making it clear on the signs that your life could be in danger if you decide to go out onto the sandbar, WFSB 3 TV reports. Rose said closing the sandbar or making Charles Island off-limits would be hard to do. There is even a discussion about having a siren going off alerting people when the tide is coming in.
