Lamont Declares State Of Emergency Due To Ida Impacts

The National Weather Service has issued several flood warnings Thursday as the remnants of Hurricane Ida pounded the state.

CONNECTICUT — The remnants of Hurricane Ida pounded the state relentlessly late Wednesday and early Thursday leaving behind historic rain totals and major flooding across the state.

Almost everyone saw between 3-7 inches of rain, and some areas received more than eight inches. Several flood warnings remain in effect Thursday.

Gov. Ned Lamont signed a declaration of civil preparedness emergency in response to the widespread flood damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

“The filing of this declaration will help provide state and local emergency management officials with the necessary tools to aid the impacted areas in safely recovering from this record-breaking rainfall that we received overnight,” Lamont said.

Fairfield, New Haven County

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Fairfield and New Haven County until 6:15 p.m. At 10:07 a.m. fooding is ongoing in the warned area from earlier heavy rain. Between 5 and 8.5 inches of rain have fallen according to radar estimates.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include: Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, Danbury, Meriden, White Plains, Milford, Middletown, Wallingford, Shelton,
Naugatuck, Port Chester, Ossining, Peekskill, Guilford, Southbury, New Canaan and Wolcott.

New flood warning for New Haven, Middlesex and New London County

The National Weather Service in Upton has extended the flood warning until 6 p.m.

At 10:24 AM, flooding is ongoing in the warned area from earlier heavy rain. Between 4 and 8 inches of rain have fallen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include: Jewett City, Meriden, Middletown, Wallingford, Norwich, New London, Guilford, Colchester, Clinton, East Hampton, Groton, Old
Saybrook, Durham, Salem, Chester, Mystic, Waterford, East Lyme, Ledyard and North Branford.


Flash flood warning is in effect until 3 p.m. for Hartford, Tolland and Windham County.

At 10:10 AM, gauge reports indicated that heavy rain had fallen across the warned area. Between 4 and 6.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include: Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, New Britain, West Hartford, Bristol, Manchester, Chicopee, East Hartford, Enfield, Southington, Westfield, Holyoke, Shrewsbury, Glastonbury, Newington, Vernon, Windsor, Agawam and West Springfield.

Several area rivers were rising towards or had crested above Moderate Flood Stage. This included the following rivers; the Mount Hope River at Warrenville, the Quinnipiac River at Southington, the Hockanum River at East Hartford, and the North Branch Park River in Hartford. Rivers that were in minor flood included the Quinebaug River at Quinebaug, and the Willimantic River at Coventry. There are likely other ungaged rivers and streams that are producing minor to
moderate flooding in the warning area.


Flood warning for Yantic River near Yantic affecting New London County

"Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas," the weather service cautions. "Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles."


The Flood Warning continues for the Still River At Brookfield.

At 1:45 a.m. the stage was 13.8 feet and flood state is 12 feet. The river is expected to rise to a crest of 14.5 feet this morning. At 14.0 feet, The river begins to flood roads and parking lots.


The Flood Warning continues for the Housatonic River At Stevenson Dam until late Saturday.

At midnight the stage was 15 feet and flood stage is 11 feet. The river is expected to rise to a crest of 17.5 feet this afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage Saturday afternoon.
