Spectacular Meteor Disintegrated Over Milford: NASA

Sky watchers throughout the Northeast reported seeing a meteor that NASA scientists say broke up over Milford Saturday night.

MILFORD, CT — Were you one of the 70 Northeast residents who saw a fireball streak across Connecticut skies this weekend?

The American Meteor Society turned the reports over to NASA, whose analysts determined the unexpected light show was a meteor that disintegrated 34 miles above Milford.

…but not before 70 sky watchers in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont took note of it at 8:02 on Saturday night.

According to a social media post from the space agency, the reports place the first sighting of the shooting star 53 miles above Oscawana Lake in New York, moving a bit south of east at a crisp 51,000 miles per hour.

If you missed the fireball, or you saw it and you've got a hankering for more, the next big sky event will be the Lyrid meteor shower, peaking the night of April 22, according to Space.com. There'll be only a waxing crescent moon to compete with it, so the viewing conditions should be primo.
