ID Released Of Man, 31, Who Died In Police Custody In Milford

A 31-year-old man who was taken into custody by police "without incident" on Saturday died early Sunday morning, police said.

MILFORD, CT — An "untimely death investigation" has been launched after a 31-year-old man, who has been identified as Justin Griffin, 31, of Bridgeport, died early Sunday, State Police said. A cause of death has not yet been released.

On Saturday afternoon, Milford Police arrested Griffin, "without incident, during the course of traffic stop when it was discovered that he was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant," police said.

"During the processing procedure, Officers observed that he was displaying signs of medical distress and Paramedics were immediately summoned to evaluate his condition. He was transported to Milford ER where he remained under observation by emergency room staff for several hours. At approximately 11 PM, after examination and observation by Emergency Room Staff, he was released and taken back to the Police Department holding facility.

"After being returned to his cell, he was closely monitored by Officers. At approximately 5 AM, he was found to be unresponsive. Officers performed lifesaving resuscitation measures and immediately summoned Paramedics. Upon their arrival, Paramedics continued these lifesaving measures and subsequently transported the subject to Milford ER. The male was pronounced deceased at that time by Emergency Room Staff," Milford Police said in a news release.

The Central District Major Crimes Squad responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the untimely death.
