"From the Vault" Volume 5-Aldermen Minutes 1969-71 -Mayor resigns
Volume 5 of the Milford Board of Aldermen minutes includes the resignation of a Mayor and the, nomination of new Mayor and much more.
Milford, CT — City Clerk Pete Smith has announced the release of Volume 5 of the Milford Board of Aldermen Minutes, covering meetings held between January 28, 1969, and March 29, 1971. This latest addition to the City Clerk’s “From the Vault” digital archive is now available to the public online.
Volume 5 captures a wide range of local history, including the administrations of Mayors Jepsen, Kozlowski, and Moore, the resignation of a sitting mayor on page 471 and the Board of Aldermen’s appointment of a new mayor. Also featured are key discussions on land acquisitions for Orchard Hills and Mathewson Schools, the Gulf Beach parking ordinance, and other important developments from that era.
“From the Vault” was launched in November 2024 by City Clerk Pete Smith as a long-term initiative to digitize and share the historic records housed in the Clerk’s Vault. The goal of the project is to make Milford’s invaluable municipal documents more accessible to residents, researchers, and historians.

“Milford’s history—whether from the 1600s or our more recent municipal milestones—has shaped the county and the community we know today,” said Smith.
In honor of the 65th anniversary of Milford’s incorporation as a city, the project is working to digitize many of the city’s oldest documents, including all Board of Aldermen meeting minutes from 1959 to the present. When complete, the archive will provide users around the world with access to the city’s rich civic history.

Founded in 1639, Milford is the sixth oldest town in Connecticut. The Town-City Clerk’s Office has been central to local governance from the beginning, with Robert Treat serving as the first Town Clerk from 1639 to 1648. Today, Pete Smith serves as Milford’s 43rd Town Clerk and 8th City Clerk. The Clerk’s Vault holds millions of original records, some more than 350 years old.
Since taking office, Clerk Smith has made transparency and public access top priorities—working to ensure that both current and historical records are available to all, no longer limited to those able to visit the office in person.
