From Rena's Ultra Boutique to Sex Over 35: A Valley Legacy Continues

Longtime residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley may remember Rena's Ultra Boutique, the Bank Street business opened by Rena Lewis in Seymour in 1971.

Known for lingerie, intimate apparel, wigs and adult novelties, Rena's was also something less visible: a place where people could shop privately, ask questions and feel accepted during a time when conversations about sexuality were far less open than they are today.

More than 50 years later, Rena's granddaughter, Ashley Fox, LPN, is carrying an unexpected part of her grandmother's legacy forward.

Ashley is now a Certified Sex Therapy Practitioner at Milford Med Spa & Wellness and will be part of Sex Over 35: Hormones, Desire, Pleasure & Connection, a free community educational event on Tuesday, September 29 from 6–8 PM in Milford.

Growing up, Ashley saw firsthand how her grandmother Rena made people feel comfortable discussing subjects that were often considered taboo. Rena welcomed customers from many different backgrounds and created an environment centered on privacy, respect and acceptance.

Today, Ashley brings those same values to conversations about sexual wellness, relationships, intimacy and the changes that can happen throughout adulthood.

Sex Over 35

Sex Over 35 will bring healthcare professionals, patients and community members together for an open, judgment-free conversation about how hormones, health, relationships and intimacy can change as we age.

Topics will include:

• How hormones can influence sexual health, desire, energy and well-being
• Perimenopause, menopause and the changes that can come with them
• Men's hormone health and changes that can occur with age
• Why desire can change and why it doesn't look the same for everyone
• The connection between physical health, medications, stress and sexual wellness
• Intimacy and communication as individuals and relationships evolve
• When changes may warrant a conversation with a healthcare provider
• How pleasure, confidence and connection can continue to evolve throughout adulthood

Ashley will be joined by Dr. Courtney Holmes, APRN, DNP, founder and medical director of Milford Med Spa & Wellness and a menopause and hormone care specialist, and Kelly Cahill, LPN, Certified Menopause Coach.

Current hormone-care patients will also share their experiences, and Courtney's husband will contribute a partner's perspective to the conversation. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in an anonymous Q&A.

Whether you've noticed changes yourself, want to better understand a partner, or are simply curious about what healthy sexuality and intimacy can look like in midlife and beyond, this evening is designed to offer education, perspective and a comfortable place for conversation.

All sexualities, gender identities and relationship structures are welcome. Come alone, with a partner or with friends. Ages 18+.
