WATCH: Waterspout in Milford Moves Inland [VIDEO]
The weather phenomenon caused damage in Woodmont Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015.
“It’s like a mischievous poltergeist.”
That’s what one person said as they watched a waterspout move from water to land in Woodmont on Sunday, Sept. 13.
The waterspout picked up kayaks, chairs and other items, sending them into the air. Richard Shain took the below video, posted it to YouTube and shared it with Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan.

“While waterspouts are not unheard of in Long Island Sound it is unusual for them to move inland,” Hanrahan said.

A tornadic waterspout forms over water or can also form over land and move to water. They mimic land tornados and can bring with them high winds, waves, hail and lightning, according to the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.
A fair weather waterspout forms on the water’s surface and moves upward.
“If a waterspout moves onshore, the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, as some of them can cause significant damage and injuries to people,” the NOAA stated. “Typically, fair weather waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland.”
