MILFORD, CT — Emergency crews responded to Subway Headquarters in Milford on Thursday afternoon after three people were exposed to white powder that was inside a letter, according to fire officials. One person was directly exposed to the white powder and two others were nearby when the envelope was opened, according to Battalion Chief Thomas A. Thornberg.

Thornberg said no injuries were reported and the powder was determined to be non-hazardous. Authorities are treating the incident as a criminal matter and it is being investigated, according to Thornberg.

The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. at the headquarters at 325 Sub Way in Milford.

“The Fire Department Haz-Mat Team with members of the FBI and Connecticut State Police, entered the area in Full Level Two protective equipment including SBCA’s, self-contained breathing apparatus, locating, testing, and deemed the material as non-hazardous,” Thornberg wrote in a news release. “The FBI took the lead with the investigation and took all measures in preserving evidence for further analysis. The Milford Fire Department members set up an area to decontaminate all that were exposed and working in the Hot Zone, the immediate area where the letter was opened. There were no injuries reported and the incident is being treated as a criminal matter and further investigation will be conducted.”
