History Lecture - Painting Patriotism, Healing Wounds: The Art of Col. John Trumbull

The Trumbull Library continues its Past, Present, and Pages America 250 series with a fascinating look at one of Connecticut's most influential artists. John Trumbull is best known for creating the iconic images that shaped how generations of Americans have imagined the Revolutionary era and the nation's founders, including his famous paintings of the Declaration of Independence and other pivotal moments in American history.
Presented by Connecticut State Historian Emeritus Walter W. Woodward, this richly illustrated lecture explores Trumbull's lifelong struggle to gain recognition for his art at a time when artists were rarely held in high regard. Woodward also examines the complicated relationship between Trumbull and his father, Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, revealing a compelling Connecticut family story behind some of America's most enduring images.
