Monroe resident Chrissy Fensore Martinez tells Patch why she should be re-elected to the Board of Education.

MONROE, CT — The 2023 municipal election is heating up in Monroe and there are plenty of races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

Chrissy Fensore Martinez, 50, is running for re-election to the Monroe Board of Education as a Democrat.

I have both a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Special Education. I also have my Connecticut certification in school administration.

What is your occupation?
I am a special education supervisor working in the field for 28 years.
Do you have a family? If so, please tell us about them.
My husband Jim is a retired education administrator, my son George is 20, daughter Kendyl is 17 and son Julian is 12.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?
No
Have you ever held a public office, whether appointive or elective?
I have been on the Monroe Board of Education for the past year.
Why are you seeking this office?
Given my background in education, as well as being a lifelong Monroe resident, I feel strongly about giving back to my community.
Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it.
I am very concerned about the national teacher shortage and the impact it could have on our community. I feel Monroe's education system is a strong one and want to continue to support the strides it is taking to be among the best in our state. As a parent, I feel grateful my children have had such a wonderful education in Monroe and want to be part of making sure that sustains for future generations as our town grows.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
The most significant difference between myself and other candidates is my many years both in the classroom as a teacher, as well as my tenure in central office positions. I have more knowledge than many around policy, budget and curriculum.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
I want all children to feel safe and supported within our schools and our community.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I feel my education and work experience along with the last year on the board make me a qualified candidate.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
The best advice I was given by my mentor during my school leadership training was to be sure that every single day I act as an advocate for children in all that I do.
