Education Board Votes to End School Year Earlier

The last day of school will be Friday, June 24, rather than Monday June 27

A June 27 end to the school year interfered with many families' vacation plans, so the Board of Education unanimously voted to instead end the year on Friday, June 24. The decision marked yet another change in a school calendar affected by 11 cancellations due to snow, ice and flooding.

Supt. of Schools Dr. Colleen Palmer said there would be no effect on education by not holding classes on Monday, June 27. The state requires districts to have 180 school days a year and the board's move cuts Monroe's year back from 182 to 181 days.

During its meeting on Monday, the Board of Education also gave the superintendent permission to negotiate the impact of the calendar change on teachers with their union, the Monroe Education Association.
