Man Using Cellphone Faces DUI After Crash in Monroe: Cops

A Derby man is facing a DUI charge following a head-on crash in Monroe on Friday.

According to police, the crash was reported in the 1000 block of Route 11 at around 8:30 p.m.

Peter Stockmal, 46 was driving south in a 2013 Subaru Impreza when he crossed over the center line a struck a 2003 Volkswagen driven by a Monroe man, police said.

According to police, Stockmal said that he looked down at his cell phone and crossed the center line while doing so.

Police said Stockmal failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane and operation of a motor vehicle while using a cell phone.

He was given a $500 bond and a court date of June 15.
