Masuk Students and Faculty Send Supplies to Troops

The collection drive benefits soldiers fighting in Afghanistan

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Social Studies department led by Department Chair Ian Lowell, organized an event that brought many local veterans to the school for a ceremony and panel discussion of what it means to be a veteran.

Along with the ceremony, the Social Studies department asked faculty and students to collect supplies that would be mailed overseas to Masuk Alumni currently fighting in Afghanistan.

The goal of the mission was to collect enough supplies to fill the Masuk showcase, and they came pretty close.  Everything from toothpaste to cookies was collected and even tuna pouches, a favorite of the troops.  Working to help the cause was Masuk’s Action Against Hunger Club.

The club Action Against Hunger is a local chapter of the international AAH organization. Katie Schmalkuche, Kelly Harrigan, and Jenny Miller are co-presidents of the club.

They, along with their many members do fundraisers and various charity projects to benefit the Monroe food pantry, AAH, the troops, or other relief efforts.  For this project the students were helping to package food and supplies to send to the troops. After the first round of packing, more than 28 boxes were organized, packed and ready to be shipped overseas.
