National Day of Prayer is May 7
The DAR and DAC wish to remind people of all faiths that Thursday, May 7 is the National Day of Prayer.
The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the CT State Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists (DAC) wish to remind people of all faiths that Thursday, May 7 is the National Day of Prayer. The theme this year is “Lord, Hear our Cry”.
With everything going on in the world, in our nation, on our streets and in our cities, we certainly need to pray for faith, help, healing and strength. Our nation has a long-standing and significant history of public prayer and national days of prayer. Our founding fathers called for days of prayer since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer in Marsh vs. Chambers (1983).
May 7 will be the 64th annual Day of Prayer. The National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952, and was signed into law by President Truman. President Reagan amended the law in 1988,
designating the first Thursday of May each year.
The DAR and the DAC perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. These groups dedicate themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served the colonies prior to or served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.
