Online, Street Campaigns Target Zoning Regs

A public info session has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 7:00pm in the Masuk Auditorium."

MONROE, CT --- A disagreement regarding the interpretation of draft text amendments to the Planning & Zoning Commission's zoning regulations has flared up online and town.

Fliers have appeared in town and online that purport:

  • Every coffee shop, cafe, pizzeria, ice cream parlor and bakery in town would limited to seating for 12 people
  • You won't be able to board your pet at your veterinarian when you go on vacation
  • You won't be able to plant a carrot, fruit tree or have a pet chicken without a zoning permit
  • Gyms aren't clearly permitted and therefor may be interpreted as prohibited

For the town's part, Monroe First Selectman Ken Kellogg wrote on the town's Facebook page:

"Having spoken to many business owners and residents, I am fully aware of the concerns that exist regarding the proposed changes. I want to be very clear: I do NOT support any regulation changes that would have negative impacts on our existing businesses, our ability to attract new business development, or create unreasonable restrictions upon property owners. In speaking with the Commission Chairman, he has assured me that this is not the Commission’s intent either.

"However, I am concerned that wording in regulations can cause unintended consequences. That is why I strongly encouraged the P&Z Commission to hold a public information session prior to any proposals going to a public hearing or a final vote by the Commission. The Commission agreed, and has scheduled this session for Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 7:00pm in the Masuk Auditorium."

After the Wednesday meeting, the amended language would be reviewed by the full Planning & Zoning Commission, who will then set a public hearing on the matter before making any final decision.

The town had published the draft language online for public review in advance of the May 9 meeting.
