Police: Stepney Elementary PTO Says Funds of Over $10K Embezzled

Monroe police are investigating to determine whether the funds were embezzled or part of legitimate PTO business.

A possible amount greater than $10,000 from the Stepney Elementary School PTO account is in question over accusations of embezzlement.

According to the Monroe Police Department, members of the Monroe School District and the Stepney Elementary School PTO told police on March 18 that discrepancies had been detected in the accounting of funds held in bank accounts for the PTO.

Bank statements turned over to the police indicated that personal and non-PTO related transactions had been drawn against the accounts.

Police identified a responsible person and obtained a search and seizure warrant on the person’s residence located in Monroe. Detectives seized personal computer equipment and banking statements related to the PTO account from the residence.

Additional search and seizure warrants were served at a bank for bank records, police said.

Once police receive the records, a forensic audit, which is expected to take several months to complete will be conducted to determine whether embezzlement occurred or whether the transactions were legitimate PTO business.

The police investigation has not determined an amount of loss as yet although PTO members estimate expenditures in excess of $10,000.
