
Dean Yaworowski, an eighth grade student at in Monroe, was named the 2011-2012 St. Thomas Aquinas Award recipient for the school. Those students awarded must show excellence in academics and exemplify the Gospel values through service and Christ-like behavior. Dean is one of the top students in his class and has earned the respect of his classmates and teachers as he is a kind, fair and compassionate young man.
The award is in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the greatest and most influential theologians of all time. He was extremely focused in the area of academics and the practice of virtue. St. Thomas lived in the 13th century, was canonized in 1323 and declared a Doctor of the Universal Church by Pope St. Pius V in 1567. In 1880, Pope Leo XIII designated him as the patron saint of all Catholic Universities, academies, colleges and schools throughout the world. His feast is celebrated on Jan. 28.
In addition to this prestigious honor, Dean was also granted a Principal's Scholarship from St. Joseph High School. This is awarded to those students who score between 94–97% on the entrance exam, and have the academic record and teacher recommendations reflective of their high scholastic ability.
