The School District Will be Closed on Monday

The new STEM Academy was scheduled to start at Masuk on Monday with all of the schools beginning their academic year on Tuesday.

Clarification: First Selectman Steve Vavrek told the school district to close on Monday and Assistant Supt. John Battista called him just after noon to confirm receipt of his message.

In anticipation of damage from Hurricane Irene, Interim Supt. of Schools John Goetz and Interim Assistant Supt. John Battista will close the school district on Monday. The new Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Academy had been scheduled to open on Monday with the rest of Monroe's public schools beginning their year on Tuesday.

First Selectman Steve Vavrek, who told them to close the district, was informed by Battista that central office had received his message at just after noon. Vavrek was meeting with emergency personnel at the Monroe Police Department.

While in the police station classroom, town officials received a conference call with Gov. Dannel Malloy, who briefed them on the status of the storm and plans for emergency services throughout Connecticut.
