In support of the 1st Annual Design and Build Competition to benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way Food Center, four local Wireless Zone’s are teaming up with The Day to collect cans for the CANSTRUCTION. In honor of the first year, Wireless Zone, A Verizon Wireless Premium Retailer, is donating a $25 gift certificate to any individual who comes in to one of the local retail locations and contributes two cans to the cause!
Canstruction is a nonprofit foundation from within the Society for Design Administration that promotes annual design competitions to benefit hunger relief in the United States. These incredible architectural masterpieces place a spotlight on the 30 million Americans that go hungry every day. These creative political and social sculptures of food cans place an emphasis on the economical need to assist the famine across the country.
Last year in 2012, Canstruction raised over 3 million pounds of food which is then donated to local food banks and distributed to community hunger aid programs and etc. This was enough food to provide over 1.5 million meals nationwide. Since its launch in 1992, Canstruction has contributed over 17.5 million pounds of food, using one can as their inspiration for contribution and change.

Talented architects, engineers, and students will use the community donated cans to construct visually and structurally Canned Art exhibits across the nation. Each year, the theme of these project focus on hunger and what the community can do to help. “These sculptures are amazing on their own, but knowing that they are built to benefit the hungry families in our country makes it even more phenomenal,” says Neil Ryan.
Wireless Zone couldn’t be more excited to participate in this incredible fundraiser and hopes to inspire the Southeastern Connecticut community to contribute!
