Child Safety Zones Safe Again

Ironically, the in danger of repeal Child Safety Zones are now safe after the majority of the Town Council voted to not move forward a public hearing to see the zones officially repealed.

Last month the council which were created in response to the sex offender facility being housed in Montville.  But that vote was done improperly and the repeal was on the Council agenda Wednesday to be set for public hearing. The zones had previously been the subject of two public hearings and been re-written, re-advertised at a cost of $5,000 to date in legal fees.  

But when the the Democratic majority of the council, which was supportive of the senior zones, moved to throw out the child zones in what Town Councilor Dana McFee called “a tit for tat move.”

"I think we should just leave it alone. The ACLU doesn't have any problems with it. Why keep wasting money? Enough is enough," McFee said. 

The vote had McFee, and councilors Rosetta Jones, Billy Caron and Chuck Longton -- the latter two breaking ranks -- vote to keep the ordinance on the books. Voting against were Town Council President Candy Buebendorf and councilors Laura Tanner and Joe Jaskiewicz.
