Montville Public Works Budget Requests for 2014 -- Up and Down

An increase in public works and Camp Oakdale; decrease in solid waste

The Montville Department of Public Works budget request for 2014 is $121,488 more than last year. The public works portion of the budget for 2013 was $2,203,057 and the department request for 2014 is $2,324,545, according to the budget documents provided by the town.

And the lion’s share of that bump is due to a $75,000 increase for public works staff salaries – save one; the administrative secretary salary was cut virtually in half. Salareis were $937,778 in '13 and the request for 2014 comes to $1,013,750. The administrative position is being cut from $75,169 to $40,685.

Another large increase is in gasoline for DPW vehicles, which went from $64,000 to $125,000. Interestingly, there is no increase in the request for diesel fuel funding.

The Camp Oakdale budget for 2013 was $58,300. For the coming fiscal year, the department is asking for $73,800 due in large measure to a $15,000 increase in the cost of field maintenance.

Solid Waste is another story altogether.

Here, the department has reduced its budget request from last year by $17,000.

In 2013, the solid waste budget was $1,040,273, but the new request for 2014 seeks $1,022,900, which can be explained by a decrease in the tipping fees – from $550,00 in ’13 to $525,00 in 2014. Salaries remain steady at $70,00 for full time post at transfer station and $20,ooo for the part time position and $38,000 for the gatekeeper position.
