What Sequestration Might Mean For Montville Schools

Montville Public Schools Superintendent Pamela Aubin said that educational programs supported by federal grants will be impacted.

“In Montville, this would impact several federal grant programs including Title I, Title II, Title III, IDEA, and Career/Tech for a total estimated reduction of $44,894.98 for 2012-2013,” Aubin said.

Title I is funding to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged. Title II is funding for educator training. Title III, part of the Higher Education Act, encompasses programing including improving English. IDEA is special education funding and career/tech is self explanatory.  

Aubin said the sequester be realized, she doesn’t believe the cuts will mean teacher layoffs.

“I do not anticipate that we would lose any teaching staff due to this reduction since this is allocated across many programs,” Aubin said.

“Should the sequestration take effect, we will review each program to make adjustments to ensure that we meet the budgetary requirements.”

Aubin said education cuts nationally “will be applied to most programs, including discretionary education programs,” adding that the “ depth of the cuts is estimated by the American Association of School Administrators to be 5.3 percent.”
