Basilica in Waterbury Offering Virtual Mother's Day Remembrance

Not wanting this year's Mother's Day to pass without some form of celebration, they have a simple, certainly different but beautiful idea.

Dear Friends,

We are all wondering of course when things will be back to "normal." We are hoping and praying that our church schedules will resume soon and although churches in certain dioceses in the country are reopening, most are not. Sadly, we have no definite answer at this time. Archbishop Blair has asked all of us priests to be creative and innovative in our efforts of evangelization and to begin to think differently about ways and means to reach out to the faithful.

Last Mother's Day, here at the Basilica, we distributed flowers to all mothers during mass and each mother placed their flower in a basket in front of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pausing for a moment of prayer as they did so. The idea was wonderfully received, and many mothers were seen smiling, others teary eyed with emotion. For obvious reasons, we will not be able to have this same tribute again this year. We did, however come up with an alternative.

Not wanting this year’s Mother's Day to pass without some form of celebration, we have a simple, certainly different but beautiful idea. We are inviting everyone to email a photo of their mother, grandmother, or anyone who has been a mother figure, either living or deceased (include date of death), to the Basilica at info@wtbybasilica.org by Thursday, May 7.

Immediately following our 4:15 Vigil mass (Saturday, May 9) and our 10:00 am Mother's Day Mass (Sunday, May 10), all photos will be shown from our projectors and can be viewed via live stream at waterburybasilica.org or wtbybasilica.org It will be accompanied with Marian hymns sung by our choir. This wonderful tribute to mothers will take approximately 20 - 30 minutes.

Mother's Day will not be the same this year; no picnics, likely no visits and little or no personal contact. Although socially distant, we hope to be spiritually close, praying for our mothers and thanking God for the gift of their life and the life that they have given to us.

God's blessings to all and in particular to our mothers.

In Christ,
Fr. Sullivan
