Police said they worked with the Martin County Sheriff's Office in Florida, where De Oliveria was attempting to flee the country, who arrested him on the high seas.
Naugatuck police arranged for the extradition of De Oliveria, who had extraditable arrest warrants leading to his transfer into the custody of Naugatuck detectives, and returned him to Connecticut to face justice, police said.
De Oliveria was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $150,000 bond and appeared in court Tuesday morning, according to police.
"This successful extradition marks a crucial step towards justice for the victim and his family," police said in a news release.
