Naugatuck Budget Proposal Likely Headed to a Referendum

A proposed tax increase has residents spearheading a petition drive to force a vote on the budget.

Naugatuck town and school budgets for 2015-16 are possibly headed to a referendum, even though nothing has been put in place yet, according to an article from the Republican-American.

Matt Katra, who has organized petitions against last years budgets, feels the budget proposals are too high, according to the article. His petition needs around 1,350 confirmed signatures to force the votes townwide. He was seen on Monday at City Hill Middle School, along with about 30 supporters, asking people to sign the petition.

The current proposed budget has increased from previous budgets about 2.7 percent, or $3 million, to a total of $116 million, of which $62.1 million is strictly dedicated to education, the article reported. This could raise residents taxes an estimated average of $227 from the current fiscal year.
