Borough leaders said the contract actually saves taxpayers money over the long-term.

NAUGATUCK, CT — New Fire Chief Paul Russell has agreed to a four-year contract and will earn a base salary of $98,000, according to the Republican-American.

Russell, 56, doesn't need health insurance because he already receives that as part of his pension from the Borough. Naugatuck officials said the borough saves nearly $45,000 because it doesn't need to pay out additional health insurance for Russell, the Rep-Am reports.
