Naugatuck Fire Offers Spring Cleanup Reminders For Residents

Fire officials remind residents outdoor burning of leaves, grass or other materials is not permitted and offered some safe alternatives.

NAUGATUCK, CT — As spring cleanup season gets underway, the Naugatuck Fire Department reminds residents not to burn leaves and other materials.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, fire officials said outdoor burning of leaves, grass or other waste materials is not permitted under Connecticut state law.

This applies year-round and includes backyard burn piles and debris fires, according to the department.

Fire officials provided the following list of safe alternatives:

  • Composting yard waste.
  • Curbside collection or drop off at your local transfer station.
  • Chipping or mulching brush.

According to fire officials, fire pits and chimeneas are permitted "provided they are screened to prevent sparks and are only burning firewood."

Leaves and brush can also be dropped of at the Naugatuck Public Works transfer station on Rubber Avenue free of charge, according to the department.

"Let's keep Naugatuck safe," fire officials wrote on Facebook, "for our families, our neighbors and our environment."
