Naugatuck Police Address Parking Concerns, Pedestrian Safety

The police commission voted to approve several changes aimed at pedestrian and vehicular safety.

Scott Street Parking Concerns

Chairman Ralph Roper Jr. read allowed the internal concern of the Naugatuck Police Department about the parking on both sides of the road street on Scott Street. After traffic studies and surveillance of the area it was recommended by the Command Staff to limit parking to one side. The Department recommended to post “no parking” signs on the south side of the road, allowing parking only on the north side of the street.

Motion by Commissioner Stephanie Savoy and seconded by Commissioner Pedro Pires to accept the Chief’s recommendation for Scott Street parking be limited to the north side of the road, which was approved.

Concern over Hillside and Millville Avenue intersection

Evona Gilday, of Hillside Avenue, voiced her concern about the intersection of Hillside Avenue and Millville Avenue. She requested the Police Commission to consider installing a ‘STOP’ sign at the intersection of Millville Avenue and Hillside Avenue.

She is concerned for more accidents happening at this location. This is a concern voiced from accidents that have incurred at this location in the past. The Police Commission requested Chief Hunt and the department conduct further traffic studies in this area and bring a recommendation to the Police Commission that will potentially decrease the number of accidents and the amount of potential accidents in the area from occurring.


Pedestrian Crossing Sign In Front of Nardelli's Approved

Motion by Commissioner Savoy and seconded by Commissioner Pires to accept and agree with the recommendation presented by Chief Steven Hunt to install a pedestrian crossing sign in the walkway on Maple Street in front of Nardelli’s.

Presentation of Chief’s Monthly Reports:

Chief Hunt presented his monthly report and notified the Commission of other departmental updates. Chief Hunt notified the Police Commission Officer McGannon resigned from the
department increasing the department’s vacancies to two.

Chief Hunt informed the Commissioners that Sergeant Pugliese submitted his letter of
intent to retire effective July 3, 2020.

Cookies with Rookies- November 16, 2019 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. inside the Bridge Street
Big Y at the Big Y Bakery. The Community will get an opportunity to meet and talk to the
new members of the department.


News from Police Commissioners:

Commissioner Joanne Allison read aloud a letter from Chief Baldwin of Torrington Police Department thanking Chief Hunt and LT. Ryan Burns for his time and commitment to serve as a panelist for their oral board for the position of Sergeant on September 16, 2019.

Commissioner Pires read aloud an email from resident Garrett Swarts of Rubber
Avenue Extension about his blind driveway. Deputy Chief McAllister had already resolved the complaint and coordinated with Jim Stewart at the street department to have the brush cleared back. Deputy Chief McAllister explained the installation of a convex mirror for the resident’s driveway was acceptable at the owner’s expense.

Commissioner Savoy read aloud an email from LT. Wayne Williams from the Ansonia Police Department, thanking Officer John Williams for his assistance in a Prostitution case they were working on. Ansonia Police Department is a small department and expressed appreciation for Officer Williams’, whom was very instrumental in their warrant service and arrests of the two suspects.

Chairman Roper read the certificate of recognition for Naugatuck Police Department for developing the first PARRI Pilot program in Western Connecticut. The certificate was issued by Jennifer Dewitt, the Behavior Health Director at the Housatonic Valley Coalition Against Substance Abuse.

Chairman Roper informed the Police Commission that the Naugatuck Police Department was recognized as a stand out community partner to the goals and mission of the Step Up Naugy Prevention Coalition from Naugatuck Youth Services.
