NAUGATUCK, CT — Naugatuck police and town officials released a statement concerning the death of George Floyd.

You can read the full letter below but in it local officials said, "We condemn the actions or the lack thereof of the Minneapolis Police Officers involved in this tragic death."

Concerning protests that have been appearing throughout the state and nation, officials said, "We also respect the community's constitutional right to freedom of speech and assembly. We further support and understand peaceful protests and the sentiment expressed by those who are outraged as a result of the actions/inactions of the Minneapolis Police Officers. We understand the need for fairness and equality in our society and in our judicial system."

Officials said they realize some people have lost trust in police based on the actions in Minnesota, but they add "We have worked hard to foster and build partnerships with our community. We commit to those of you whose trust has been diminished that we will work even harder to gain your trust back."

"We cannot let the actions of a few officers .... nationwide .... define who we are locally," officials wrote. "The Naugatuck Police Department is blessed with amazing men and women who do phenomenal work every day. But we are also human and as such we will make mistakes from time to time. We hold ourselves accountable and assure you that we strive to conduct ourselves in an honorable and respectful manner."
